Summertime, Summertime

Who says I can't still play with my little girl's hair? I'm very proud of her for donating 10 inches of her hair last month, but it's sad that there are so many hairstyles we can't do these days because of how short it is. Well, I'm bound and determined the cute hairstyles and fun we have trying new things in her hair will continue.

Here's the latest style I tried on LA. It starts by parting the top of her hair into 4 sections and braiding each section. Then the braids on the far sides are pulled directly back into 2 ponytails while the 2 middle braids are first criss-crossed over each other and added to the opposite ponytails.

We added a couple of pink ribbons and it's done. I was actually amazed at how well this style stayed in her hair all day! Despite tons and tons of playing.

And I'm told she received tons of compliments at VBS on how incredibly cute her hair was.

Who can resist such cute side piggies?

Last night I made the "beer meat" once again that my family absolutely raved about, otherwise known as the crockpot lady's Hirino Psito Slow Roasted Pork.

With the help of a silly little 3 year old, of course, who always comes running to the kitchen to help me when I'm cooking because he loves to pour in all the ingredients.

This time the only changes we made were eating the shredded meat over potatoes instead of on rolls and I had to buy, believe it or not, gluten free beer! It turns out only a handful of beers are made GF, including Redbridge by Anheuser-Bush. We called around and one of our local Albertson's actually carries a small case in stock because they have another customer with celiac who requests it every once in a while.

Because it was the very first day in over a week without rain, and because it was projected to be the only day like that this week, and because IK is away at camp all week and SD was working, I thought I would take this opportunity to cut the grass that really needed some attention.

I usually leave this chore up to the boys because of my extreme grass allergies, but thought it might be nice for SD to come home to this chore already done for a change. I managed to get the front yard done and the perimeter and a little of the back yard done when the mower stopped. I couldn't figure out what was wrong with it, but about that same time a severe allergy sneezing attack started and I knew it was time for me to jump in the shower and get all that grass off of me. So at least I got some of it done for him.

When SD came home, after riding his motorcycle in to work that day, he insisted that he would finish the mowing and that I needed to jump on my bike and go for a ride while the weather was nice. I think he felt kind of bad that it's been another month and I haven't had any time to ride again because of our schedules & the awful weather.

So I jumped on my bike, and despite KW's perfectly articulated sentence of, "Mom please stay here," I went for a ride on a beautiful sunny day! No agenda, no timeframe, just out for a ride wherever I wanted to go. I ended up riding about 35 miles by the time I came home and it was so relaxing and fun.

SD had also blown up the little pool I had bought and promised the kids they could play in if they finished cleaning their rooms, so I couldn't resist a few action shots. They speak for themselves.

As I finished making dinner SD finished mowing the yard for me...and left me a little message in the back yard when he was done. Love grass, you gotta like that! I mean, how many people have ever expressed their love to you in lawn care before, huh?

The girls thought it was pretty funny to see a giant heart in the backyard.

Yeah, it is funny, and it made me smile again when I woke up this morning and still saw it in the back yard. Who needs expensive gifts or Hallmark cards when you can just cut the grass?

LA's Hair!

Well, it finally happened. We tried to put this off for several months, but finally LA had a haircut. Why is this such a big deal? Well, because it was only the SECOND haircut she's ever had in her 7 + years of life...and because she wanted to cut it really, REALLY short!

I kept trying to change her mind, explaining how beautiful her long hair is and how much fun it is to play with and try so many amazing hairstyles like this, this, this, and esp. this.

But she came back with such a noble argument, telling me she wanted to donate her hair just like I did about a year ago. So, how could I argue with that?

Of course I still tried to talk her out of it, but she said, "Mom, it's okay, hair grows." And yeah, all of my arguments were worthless.

So off we went to the store, but first a couple of before photos to show exactly how much hair we were saying goodbye to.

In order to donate your hair you must have at least 10 inches available.

Here she goes, so bravely into the shop.

LA was extremely excited...while I was doing my best not to mourn her gorgeous hair too much and hold back the lump in my throat.

Brushing her hair nice and smooth first...and all I could think about was all the fun times I've had playing with her hair, since EJ never lets me play with her hair anymore but LA still would.

Separating her hair into 2 ponytails, and then...the BIG cuts!!!!

And it's gone! Now for the styling and evening the ends.

YIKES! Can you say SHORT???!!!!

She sat so perfectly still and smiled the whole time.

I think she suddenly looks way too grown up...for seven years old!

A quick blow dry and that's it! Off we went to the car heading for home. Several other people waiting in the lobby were also pretty shocked after seeing this little girl with such long hair come out with such short hair!

Okay, now that we're in the car, a quick moment to squeal over just how short her hair is!!!

She absolutely LOVES it!!!!

Yes, I was still taking pictures of her the next morning as she was getting ready for school. Here's the, "Mom, I'm trying to eat my breakfast" look.

Everyone at school was so surprised and she received many compliments on her new cute cut.

While I really miss my baby girl's beautiful long hair, I'm extremely proud of her for donating her hair to such a noble cause. LA says she wants to grow her hair long and donate it over and over again, but for now she totally loves her short hair.

Quick and Easy Cuteness

So we haven't gotten LA's haircut yet. I had convinced myself I could handle the idea of her hair being so short the way she wants it cut, but I haven't been able to do it yet.

In the meantime, here's a really easy and fairly quick hairstyle that's something different from the typical 2 ponytails.

Start by separating 6 small sections across the front of her hair and making them into little braids.

Then take three of those braids from the left side of her head and add them to the ponytail on the right side.

Now repeat this process by taking the three braids from the right side and crossing them over to combine with the ponytail on the left side. For a slightly different look you could criss cross or basket weave the braids over and under each other instead of gathering all of them together.
