1st Day of School 2009

It's the end of August, which means it's the end of summer and the beginning of a new school year. We've bought all the necessary school supplies, backpacks, etc. and now my kids are trying to get used to new, much earlier sleep schedules.

This year is interesting and brings many new changes as IK is a freshman in high school. I can't believe I actually have a child old enough to be in high school!

IK's been struggling with a stubborn stomach bug lately that comes and goes. He was too sick to make it to freshman orientation, where he would have an opportunity to tour the school and become more familiar with where everything is, so he was a little nervous about finding his classes on the first day, but everything went fine.

The high school schedule operates on a 2 day schedule: A days and B days, where he has 4 different classes each day. He had a little bit of an introduction to this schedule last year. He felt fine on the 1st day of school, but came home sick again on day 2...not a great way to start off the school year. Hopefully he'll kick this bug soon.

IK's been very stressed out and concerned about doing well in high school this year. I think he's focusing on the pressure of how much his grades will impact his future and being able to afford going to college through scholarships vs. through student loans.

EJ is continuing in middle school in 7th grade this year. She seems very well adjusted and at home in her school. So far she really likes all her teachers and it appears as if she's doing very well so far. She's still trying to adjust to waking up so early and focusing on homework when she gets home, but otherwise she's doing well.

LA's also doing really well. She's extremely responsible, even at age 7 as she heads into 2nd grade. She often reminds me of the homework she needs to do. (this is from the child who actually reminds me that she needs to take her medicine when she's sick!).

In the meantime, KW is doing his best to adjust to the new schedule with a MUCH quieter house when all his usual playmates are gone at school all day. I've been spending more time playing with him, cuddling, and yesterday we went on a special bike ride to go pet some nearby horses.

It's a weird, strange feeling to have a child in high school, one in middle school, one in elementary school, and a toddler still at home. With all of the new changes and adjustments each school year brings it's been a very good thing that we haven't moved anywhere...so that as all these other areas change, our home remains a constant refuge from all those stresses.

And speaking of school, SD is now enrolled in his LAST class before he will complete his bachelor's degree! He will graduate in less than 5 weeks from now! I have just 2 more classes left to go, and with a couple of breaks in between them, I will graduate Dec. 14th...and with both of us out of school, it should be one awesome Christmas this year!
